We are veterans of many types of gates for both dogs and now kids, and I am crestfallen that it took us this long to discover this terrific model. It combines the security of a permanent mount with the relative ease of installation and occasional portability of pressure-mounted models.

I had two irregular doorways to fill in with child gates so our scootching 13-month old could play safely in the area. For one large opening I used the SuperYard Gate, which is a decent all-plastic telescoping gate with permanent-mounting rails, and for the other I used the First Years hands-free with a single extension. After seeing how secure the First Years was, and how incredibly east it was to install the extensions, even though I’m happy with the SuperYard Gate, I wish I had bought two First Years Hands-Free,

The operation is really cool — you step on a pedal, and knee the thing open. It works in both directions! I was skeptical the pedal was baby-proof, but letting my son (who is the median weight of a two and a half year old) put his full weight on it didn’t budge it a bit. The design is also very attractive; nice thin white metal instead of the usual lattice-work plastic on most gates.

One comment on an earlier negative review, where the Grandparent indicated their 15-month-old could pull up the foot pedal: this cannot open the gate if the top is properly tightened! (See below). I tried this, and the pedal will slide but not allow the gate to open if the top is tight.

I have only a few minor caveats to convey:

- when installing it, make sure you follow the instructions and use the little plastic wrench (included) to do some fine-tuning tightening, so that the upper latch is the required distance from the catch (a wrench-width). This is easy to do, and I found that when I tightened it up as the instructions indicated, the good fit of the latch became excellent even with a slightly-irregular-from-vertical door post.

- the opening might be a little narrow compared to some other gates; it took a bump or two on my calf to get the hang of, nothing terribly difficult or painful.

- the extension might not be necessary if you have an opening that’s right on the cusp of the suggested 29-34″ door opening; if you have an opening right around the maximum, I’d recommend installing it without the extension first to avoid having to make a return for a possible un-needed extension. Installing and de-installing the extension, as I noted, is a piece of cake.

- this is not “portable” the way a simpler gate is, but can be de-installed and re-installed in less than two minutes. Since it swings open, if you want to use the gate in only one location, the portability isn’t an issue.

All in all, just about the coolest gate I’ve used.

After trying 3 different gates (that all had high ratings on Amazon), this wasn’t my favorite – but is still a good gate. I just preferred some of the features of the others. If it had a wider gate opening, I would have given it a 5 star rating. I turned my home into my own version of a baby gate showroom to figure out which one I wanted, so here’s my take on three different gates.

I think they are all pretty good gates, it just depends on your situation and what features you’re looking for. The key features that ended up making a difference to me were 1) the width of the gate opening and 2) the latch mechanism

First Years – Hands-Free Gate

—————————–

cost $50 & extensions $15 / gate is 32″ Tall / fits 29″-34″ doorway width / 1.5″ bar to step over / gate opening 17″

- My gripe with this gate was primarily because the gate opening is only 17″ wide! I’m 5′8″ and I felt like I was going to have to really pay attention walking through it so I wouldn’t end up bumping it every time. However…

- The hands-free step pedal is pretty cool and worked pretty easily. I wouldn’t worry about a little kid figuring it out and having enough weight to be able to push it down to open it. For me it just wasn’t cool enough to overcome my issue with the gate opening width.

- Good height to the gate.

- It was very sturdy in my doorway.

- This one did have a little ramp feature for the bar that goes across the floor that helps minimize the tripping factor.

- Fits only up to 34″ doorways so has the best chance of needing an extension.

- All that being said, if you really want a hands free gate, and the width of the gate opening doesn’t bug you, try this one.

Kidco Center Gateway:

———————

cost $85 & extensions $24 / gate is 29.5″ Tall / fits 29.25″ to 37.5″ doorway width / 1″ bar to step over / gate opening 22″

- Has the widest gate opening (the space you walk thru, not the doorway that it fits into) of any of them – about 22″. (This certainly won points from my 6′2″ husband who was pretty irritated when walking thru some of the others). I was surprised after reading so many reviews on all these gates that there wasn’t more mention of this feature.

- This one also had the most secure latch feature. You have to push a button to lift the handle and lift the gate over a little ledge to open it and walk thru. I figure this will absolutely be the hardest one for my little one to figure out.

- This gate has the most adjustable widths and therefore would probably be the strongest in most door widths. The gate has about 2.75″ pieces on the ends that you can use or not with the optional extensions (more 2.75″ spindles as additions – 2 per box) to provide the most width flexibility. Because all the gates become “weaker” if the posts are extended too much, this one seems the sturdiest in my doorways. (ie. if the gate says it fits up to 37″ and your door opening is 36.5″, it won’t seem as sturdy as if the doorway was 34″).

- It doesn’t have its brand name printed on it anywhere (a plus in my book) so it’s totally white.

- It has the lowest bar across the floor that you have to step over at only 1″ high (seems less of a tripping risk).

- This is the one that has the highest rating from Consumer Reports. (Child safety gates 8/04)

- Unfortunately, it also is the most expensive of the bunch at about $85 + any extensions you need.

- I do have to say that this one had the most confusing directions, but you can still figure it out ok – none of them took longer than 10 minutes to set up.

- It’s the shortest gate and I wish it was a little taller.

- All in all, if you can afford the price of this one, it’s definitely worth it!

Summer Infant – Sure & Secure Extra Tall Gate

———————————————

cost $60 & extensions included / gate is 36″ Tall / fits 28″-48″ doorway width / 2″ bar to step over / gate opening 19″

- This is the one that I wanted to like because I thought it was the best deal.

- The gate opening is about 19″ – which I thought was ok, but hubby wanted wider.

- The latch mechanism is really easy to operate and I thought kids could figure it out easily, but because the gate is so tall, they would probably have a hard time reaching it.

- It does come with its own extensions in 5″ and 10″ so it more easily fits the wider doorways.

- However, depending on the width of your doorway, this one may or may not fit as well. For example, I had a lot of doorways that are about 33″ and this gate didn’t end up fitting well in them because the gate without any extensions was too small and the posts had to be extended so far it didn’t seem stable. And the 5″ extension was too big to add. (vs. the kidco gate’s extensions add 2.75″ as needed).

- It’s by far the tallest and I liked that since my daughter has been in the 95% so far. I also just like the way the taller gate looks.

- It does have the highest bar across the bottom to step over – 2″.

- If if fits well in your doorway it is probably the best value for the money.

All three gates seemed to:

- Fit pretty tightly in the doorways after being adjusted properly. Depending on your walls and if you have moldings etc, you might need to take an extra 5-10 minutes to adjust them and get them straight and hanging correctly.

- Had the same type of post for the pressure-mount that is covered with a rubbery material to help it not slip on the wall.

- Were pretty easy to set up.

- All look about the same from a quality point of view – in other words one of them didn’t look “cheaper” to me than the others.

Please remember that for safety, only hardware mounted gates are considered stable enough to put at the top of stairs, so don’t use any of these for that. Think about how you will use these gates in your house and what features you will value. Good luck with your own purchase!

This gate is really a great product. I love the fact that you don’t have to hardware mount the gate (no drilling into the doorways required), and it’s still very sturdy. It was incredibly easy to install, and is very safe and secure. My 18 month son knows how the gate opens, but cannot open it because of the weight required to push down on the lever. The only negatives I encountered were:
1) The first Hands Free gate I purchased was not painted properly, so I had to return it for another one.

2) I had to buy the 5″ gate extension for the gate to fit in the doorway. So, in the end, there are additional costs if the opening you intend to use the gate for is not that narrow. But all in all, it’s totally worth it.

smclin8 May 12, 2010 at 1:12 am [edit]

I returned the Swing and Lock gates and got this one. I am not disappointed. It was worth the additional cost. It comes with its own tool, which fastens the pressure mounts securely. I did not need an extension, so I cannot comment on how sturdy it is using those. It is very easy to open and close, and the gate swings in both directions. It was also easy to install. I have no complaints. I can’t believe how many people report bad experienced using these on stairs. If you read the directions, it is NOT to be used on stairs. If your child gets hurt, you have nobody else to blame but yourself!

This gate is NOT for everyone. The opening is only 18″ wide, so this would not be for a home with a wheelchair. Although it installs easily, I wouldn’t suggest this one if you plan on moving it from doorway to doorway on a regular basis. It takes a few minutes, not something I’d want to do all day. But it is very easy to move, such as if you where having a party or needed to move furniture.

This gate is well made, but I do have one concern about durability. It has a plastic pin that locks the swinging part into place. I wonder if someone who does not push the pedal enough and pushes the gate, probably an unfamiliar adult or older child, could break it. I haven’t seen anything to that affect in other reviews, so maybe not. Still, I’d have prefered to see metal. Maybe that concern is unfounded, I guess we’ll see. Buy this gate.

I have had this gate for 6 months with no problems. I can see how the pedal could break and cause a problem however, This gate works so well in my house, it would be worth a little inconvenience if I had to replace the pedal or return the gate for a replacement. Even with that possibility I still rate it 5 stars!! It is located in the most traveled area of my house and it works beautifully!!! Besides my daughter, I also have 3 dogs that have tried to get through to the other side without causing any damage!!! I contacted First Years about this gate because I WANT MORE!! Only problem is it only goes to 34″. I need wider for my other openings. I have been informed that they have created and shipped out extensions which will add up to 5″ per side, to be sold exclusively at Toys R Us. I have contacted our local store and they have received them in stock. On my way to buy 2 more!!!!!

  • Foot-pedal operated
  • Gate swings open in both directions
  • Fits all standard doorways 29″ to 34″ wide, and will fit openings up to 44″ wide with Gate Extension Kit
  • Pressure-mounted design that won’t mar walls or doorways

Product Description

Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So First Years designed the next best thing — a safety gate that doesn’t require any hands at all! But even though it’s simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it’s too difficult for a baby. The gate fits all standard doorways 29″ to 34″ wide, and, with use of the Gate Extension Kit (sold separately) will also fit other openings up to 44″ wide. The pressure-mounted design won’t damage walls or doorways. An audible click lets you know the gate has locked.

Read more on The First Years Hands Free Gate

Because of its simple “knee-knocker” mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit. To operate, simply press on the pedal with your toes and then bump the knee plate with your knee. Closing is just a nudge in the opposite direction; you will hear a click when the latch has caught, offering peace of mind that it’s secure again.

foot pedal
The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open.

The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate’s vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side.

Able to fit in standard doorframes (29″ to 34″ wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider The First Years Hands Free Gate Extension kit even if using in a standard doorway.

Before you buy, there are two things to be aware of. One, the actual opening for parents, kids, and/or pets to walk through is only about 18 inches wide. Two, if you want to use this in a doorway and be able to close the door, the foot pedal sticks out too far to allow this. For use with children up to 24 months.

we needed a gate to fit in between the kitchen and livingroom which a little larger space than normal. i spent alot of time reserching gates about 2 months and i decided on this one, and i am so glad i did. it is perfect. it only took me about 20 mintues to set it up and get it right. we have it about 1/2 an inch of the floor so just in case it did slip or something it would not scratch the hardwood floor. it shuts great, opens great and locks great. my 14 month old son loves it to because he can see through it so he knows what is going on in the other room, the gate does shut by itself but i think that is good if you want to keep it open just put a shoe in front of the door and there you go its open. i love it love it love it, way worth every little penny. i would recommend this product to anyone and everyone. it is also not bulky looking and it looks nice when it is up not like most gates. it is pressure mounted so no screws in your wall. and if you have to you can still step over it, low enough to if you need to, but yet still high enough so shildren cant get over and because of it being designed the way it is, it is also very hard for the little ones to climb. again love it love it love it

This is a great product and a great place to buy it. We currently have this gate in a 48″ doorway, and our 20-month-old rather rambunctious daughter has yet to break out or tear it down. (Yes, of course, she has tried!) It was relatively easy to set up (probably easier than most of the baby toys I’ve put together). It is easy to get in and out of, mainly because the door swings both ways. I do not particularly love that the door is hinged with a spring, however; there have been some close calls with fingers almost getting pinched. The spring also makes it difficult to keep the door open without installing an eye hook in a nearby wall to attach it to with string (or, like us, those baby rings they sell for hanging baby items so that kids can’t choke themselves with it). Still, I’m amazed at the gate’s ability to withstand lots of abuse but still maintain top quality function. We chose not to screw it into the wall and only use the sticky pads that lock it in place when you’re setting it up. I wondered if we’d regret that and end up taking it apart to screw it into the wall. It hasn’t been an issue at all. The thing is just ridiculously sturdy. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a gate for a wider doorway that is used frequently; it’s well worth the money.

Quick update: We now have a 2.5-year-old and a 10-month-old, and the gate is as sturdy–and useful–as ever. My 2.5-year-old can’t get it open, which is great, and my younger one can pull up on it without any fear of it moving. The spring in the hinge is still annoying for pinched fingers, especially when my 2.5-year-old tries to be “helpful” and shut it for me. Pinched fingers haven’t yet happened, but that’s mainly due to good luck and mom’s watchful eyes. Overall, I still highly recommend the gate–I’d buy it again in a heartbeat if I needed something for a wide doorway.

This gate is well worth the money and will definitely last for quite some time. I have two and use one at the top of the stairs. I really wish the door was a bit wider when bringing groceries in and out of the house, but compared to the other gate options, this one wins hands down! My toddler will try to get through and even knows where to put his hand on the latch, but because you have to pull up while releasing the latch, he’ll never be able to open it! Go ahead and spend the money. You will not be disappointed!

I love my new gate. It is sturdy and beaufiful. I actually have no children, but I have 3 small dogs that make it very difficult, if not impossible, to open the front door of my house. I mounted the gate just inside the foyer which enables me to enter the foyer through the gate, close the gate behind me and open the front door to meet people without fear of my dogs getting out. It is wonderful. The gate can be either pressure mounted or hung with provided hardware. I am having no problems with the pressure method. The shipping was speedy and the product well packed. I would purchase again from this company without giving it a second thought.

We now have 3 of the gates. They are well made of steel. Very easy to mount. They come with extendable threaded shafts that insert at each end (top and bottom) with a threaded collar that controls the pressure between the gate and wall. Operation is by sliding a lever on the top of the gate and lifting up.

Sara Burkett May 11, 2010 at 8:53 pm [edit]

After three previous children and three sets of previous gates I finally found some worth the price. These are fabulous. My youngest loves to stand up holding the bars and shake them back and forth and they do not open. They are easy to install and to adjust. I use them on all my childrens rooms. At night for security purposes I put a piece of pipe insulation over the bottom bar lock to keep them from closing all the way and that way if there is an emergency they can get out easily and don’t have to fiddle with the gate. The pipe insulation also works great to keep them from locking when the baby is asleep. I also have the extra tall gate near our back door where our lab has his bed. He cannot jump this one and it is sturdy enough that when he puts his front paws on it he cannot move it. Even better it is made of metal and he can’t chew it up either. Recommend these to everyone with a baby or dog!

Very pleased with this gate, over all. It certainly seems that my little Houdini guy will not be able to open it until he is much older and that was a big concern. The swing-closed feature works well and is nice when your hands are full. The typical hallway, doorway, stair or entry that this gate would be used in will require that you purchase more than just the extensions in this particular package. Even if you measure properly there’s always something you wish fit differently. In hind sight I wish I had gone with the taller version. Little Houdini is now an ambitious climber.

Love the gates. My husband didn’t have trouble installing them at all. My daughter is now safe from our stairs and she can’t open them. I do regret getting the extra-tall gates tho because our dog can jump over them. But besides that they were great!

We wanted to use the gates in a standard hallway and according to the measurements it should have worked. We ended up having to use both extensions on one gate to get it to fit across the hallway and Babyage sent us additional extensions for the other gate but they are in black. The gate itself is good and easy to use.

I think they are all pretty good gates, it just depends on your situation and what features you’re looking for. The key features that ended up making a difference to me were 1) the width of the gate opening and 2) the latch mechanism

Kidco Center Gateway:

———————

cost $85 & extensions $24 / gate is 29.5″ Tall / fits 29.25″ to 37.5″ doorway width / 1″ bar to step over / gate opening 22″

However…

I purchased two and love them. The gate was easy to open and close. Installation was easy, but took some time to get the tension in place correctly. I felt it was very sturdy. I think the people who thought is was not, did not install the gate correctly. My little one was constantly hanging and pulling on them. Another thing I found great was, you can install it on walls that are uneven since the top and bottom screws adjust individually. I also loved the fact that they did not need to be permanently installed which leaves holes in the walls. We were just renting at the time, and I didn’t want the hassle of taking them off and repairing the holes when we moved. I would certainly recommend this gate, just take the time to install it correctly and you will not have any trouble. However, like the safety experts say, a permantly installed gate is better for the top of the stairs.

We bought this gate to use with our 13 month old and were very excited not have to install hardware to the wall. It was up for about 24 hours when I heard the baby cring that cry that you know they are in pain. I found her at the gate, both knees were wedged between the vertical poles. I managed to get one knee out but had to put vegtable oil on the other one to free it. She of course was screaming the whole time and her knees were bruised. Very nice design but I bought it for safety and that’s not what I got. The company said they just shortened the space between the rails, but I think it’s too close now seeing how her knees got stuck. Good luck to anyone trying to keep little ones out of harms way. That’s a job in itself.

We love that this gate did not require drilling into our walls, and once installed it is extremely sturdy. It also is not easy for little ones to climb over since there are only vertical bars We have two of these gates at the bottom of our stairs on a landing. The only bad thing is the bar that goes across the bottom of the opening – it makes things a little precarious if the gate is on the bottom step of a staircase, or at the top and you need to step over it to go down (we had one at the top of the stairs and ended up moving it. Luckily, no holes to patch!). The opening mechanism is tricky for a first time user, but once you read the instructions or someone shows you how to use it, it is very simple.

I am the mother of active 11 month old twin boys. I purchased this gate for the bottom of our stairs. My husband and I had had a difficult time finding a gate to fit the uneven opening of our staircase; the spindles curve inward a great deal. We tried this particular gate and it worked great. My boys both stand up next to it and try to shake it but are unable to even budge it. It is a good, sturdy gate. I recommend it especially for those who have uneven openings. I plan on purchasing another to place upstairs.

  • Pressure mounted metal gate
  • Does not damage walls or hardwood
  • Should be used in door openings
  • Not recommended for the top of steps
  • Constructed of strong tubular steel

Product Description
KidCo’s premiere Center Gateway is a pressure mounted gate that installs quickly without tools or hardware, leaving no holes to damage walls or woodwork. The U-shaped frame remains firmly installed while the center walk-through door opens in either direction.

The basic Center Gateway fits openings of 29.25″ to 37.5″ wide. Optional Gateway 5.5 Extensions are available for openings up to 48 1/8″ wide. Constructed of strong tubular steel, it stands 29.5″ tall. It’s great for kids and pets.

Features:

  • Pressure mounted gate
  • Easy to install without tools or hardware
  • Walk-through door opens in either direction
  • Fits openings of 29.25″ to 37.5″ wide
  • Optional extensions are sold separately

Unlike most of the metal baby safety gates on the market, the Center Gateway does not permanently attach to walls or banisters with hinges and screws. Instead, this 29.5-inch-high steel barrier uses a pressure-mounted system to hold it in place across doorways and halls in your house. Although it may lack the complete strength of a permanently mounted gate and probably shouldn’t be used in front of stairways, the Center Gateway is far more versatile: after installation you can easily detach and move it throughout your home to block off-limit rooms and spaces as needed. The Center Gateway also eliminates the need for drilling holes into the wood and metalwork around your home. The gateway is designed to block spaces from 29.25 to 37.5 inches wide, and you can purchase optional extension kits (sold separately) to extend the gate’s length to almost 49 inches. Adult assembly is required.

The gate is sturdy and hardware mounted, so it can be used by stairs. Since it is so long, there is a little bit of “give” in the middle – it can be flexed out maybe an inch or two. My biggest gripe with this is that it is advertised as fitting openings up to 72″. Our stairway is 74″ but we figured that we could add a 2×4 to the wall to make it work. Not the most attractive option, but there are not a lot of gates this size that are also hardware mounted. Well, the gate itself is only 66″ wide. The other 6 inches come from the allowance of 3″ of screws showing on either side of the gate. So, yes it will fit a 72″ wide doorway, but I felt it was a little misleading to not explain this in the description.

This was easy to install, and works great. It’s a bit of a learning curve to remember that there’s a bar at the base, but once you trip over it once or twice, you’ll remember that it’s there. :-) Our 1-year-old pulls and tugs and bangs on this, and the cats jump on and over it all day long, and it doesn’t budge. The door is easy to use, I can do it one-handed if I’m carrying the baby or groceries or whatever. The gate swings both ways, and in our case it’s carpet on one side, tile on the other. If I open it to the carpet side, it will stay put, if I open it to the tile side it swings back. It does NOT shut and latch automatically, but that is part of what will keep the baby from figuring out how to use it for quite a while. It adjusts easily, fits our 53″ wide living room doorway nicely, and actually still has one more expansion piece, so it could go much wider still. Also, it looks nice, and the holes that we had to put in the walls were pretty small, they’ll be easy to caulk and paint over in a few years when we don’t need the gate anymore.

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made!! I have a one year old and two toy poodles and this gate works perfect for keeping them out of the entry way!! This way the dogs don’t sneak out when people come over and my daughter doesn’t get hit by the door either!! It was so easy to install-even though figuring out the extension length was a little tricky, but the screws for the extensions were easy enough to take out and move to figure out the right width!!

I previously just had a wood gate I had to step over (and so did my guests) which was an inconvienence. I would trip over it constantly! This gate was perfect for me because I needed a gate to span about 67″ and this one fit the bill with room to spare! The gate is extremely secure, you have to put holes in the wall, but I would rather have that than those pressure mounted gates any day! The latch is easy to push with the ease of your thumb and you just lift the gate over the metal bar on the floor-which is another feature I love-the gate has the added security of the bar on the floor to hold the bottom of the gate into place! The gate swings either way and is not auto locking, which I don’t mind. I would rather lift it up and close it myself so I know it’s closed. The actual gate width is nice-it’s a bit over 19 inches-I can walk thru with ease, even with the car seat. Over all, I would recommend this gate with high ratings!!

We purchased this gate for the top of our staircase. Because it is designed for wider doorways/openings, we were able to gate off the top of our landing rather than the top step of our staircase. In our situation, this allows us to more safely step over and operate the gate from the safety of the landing instead of the top step.

Installation was quite easy. We purchased a separate gate adapter (brand: ’boutKIDS) in order to secure one end of the gate into a banister. A power drill was vital to secure the drywall anchors for the other end of the gate, a pencil or pen helped us mark where to place the anchors, and a level ensured our gate hung correctly. An extra set of hands makes installation go quickly.

The latch is easy to operate. I am pleased that the gate does not swing closed by itself (a criticism from other reviewers), but that really is personal preference: while others want the security that their gate is always closed, I appreciate that this gate stays open when I leave it open and allows me to easily go up and down the stairs when my child is in her crib, downstairs, or not at home.

The gate swings in both directions, always allowing me to push it out of my way rather than pulling it towards me (which seems unsafe if I have to back up to then walk around the door).

Another reviewer was wise to point out that the mounting brackets rotate for easy removal of the entire gate, and it’s worth repeating.

Gate seems great. It is well built and steardy. The gate will stay open so that you can walk freely, if you need to. The only down falls I found is the limited color selection. On the website it looks white but is really biege and their is a lower bar that stays in place even when gate is open and several people don’t notice it and trip. I cannot speak to its effectiveness on protecting children or any hazards it may have–my infant isn’t crawling yet. We were just ahead of the game.

I bought a hands-free gate for my baby’s doorway and really liked it. But the hall at the top of the stairs was too wide for one, which realy disappointed me. Then I found the extension. I bought another gate, and one extension. It fits great, and the extension fots so perfectly that it looks like part of the gate. The gate is just as sturdy with the extension as without. Definitely a good product.

I was worried that the extension would be loose, or threaten the integrity and safety of the gate itself. But it isn’t, and doesn’t, and took literally seconds to snap onto the gate. Yahoo!

The editorial led me to believe there were TWO gate extensions per box (which is what I needed). I was very disappointed when the shipment came and there was only ONE gate extension.

The hands free gate works beautifully. However, when you need to order extentions for a larger doorway realize one extention kit does not give you the maximum 44″ coverage. I had to order an additional one when I realized the error and had to pay shipping twice.

This gate extension works as described. It connects easily and looks like part of the gate when installed, rather than just an extra piece. It was just what we needed!

  • Perfect for oversized doorways
  • Pressure mounted
  • 6 Mos.-24 Mos.

Product Description
The First Years Hands-Free Gate Extension makes your Hands Free Gate more versatile. Each extension adds up to 5 inches to the gate. Do no use more than two extensions with each gate.

Many homes feature a potentially troubling combination: curious toddlers plus doorways too wide for standard gates. This extension unit is designed for use with other First Years Hands Free gates, and can be used to cover areas that gates can’t reach. The set includes one five-inch extender unit, which, once installed, is immobile, allowing the gate to open and shut between them or between an extender and the wall.
